How Do I Tell My Roommate to Go Find New Friends

My roommate is currently someone that came with me to Oklahoma to go to school since this school was really good for both of our majors. I thought it would be good to have someone that I knew room with me in college in case the suddeness of not having my parents around all the time got to me.

He's just been really annoying really. He screams when he watches League of Legends on his computer and he plays his music out loud and he's a hypocrite about his own rules that he makes. He spends most of the day playing games and having to talk to his friends at the same time and it just annoys me.

For those who remember I posted about getting an RA position, I also get a single room but I have the option of rooming with him for 50% off housing, but I just don't think I'll be able to stand him.

Tomorrow he wants to go check out the dorm I'll be in charge of (the oldest building on campus, so it's not the best) to see if it's up to his standards and I just want to tell him that I don't want to room with him and for him to leave me alone cause I've had enough of him and his BS. Should I be upfront about it or should I just leave it and put up with him for another year.

Oh and for those who see my (I'm looking for a car but it's difficult cause college.) posts, I've added 2003-2004 Lexus GX and RX to it. It irks me they're the same price right now cause we own a 2003 GX and it totally cost more than an RX back in 2003.

Kinja'd!!!

Oh and picture. Disco Volante. Always welcome on this blog.

It sucks, but you have to be honest that you want to take the RA position seriously and you just can't if he's living with you. THat's probably the "soft" way to put it. Because if he doesn't want to be an RA, then you've got that going for you. You can use that as a way to make a clean break.

Mistake #1. You should have gotten used to not having your parents around all the time BEFORE college.

I too share a house with one of those types, gaming all the time, always yelling while online playing with his friends. Luckily it's rather large house so it doesn't affect me much, but in your situation, if he's doing that shit in your dorm, don't put up with it. You can be brutally honest with him and maybe burn that bridge, or you can decide to use tact to skirt an awkward situation, try coming up with some sort of reason why you can't room with him anymore, it doesn't have to be completely legitimate.

Oh god, if only you guys knew.

I've only gone out for groceries like 10 times in college and about 8 times for dinner on Friday nights with these new people I met and this added together is already more than I've gone out with friends in my entire high school 4 years.

Like my friends and I coordinated to volunteer at the same events in high school because that's the closest I'd get to going out with friends.

I am very lucky to have a roommate that only lives 25 minutes from me back home and we get along together great. And we never knew each other before college. Honestly just tell your roommate how it needs to be. If he is not giving you the courtesy you want, then there is no need to give him what he wants.

After I got RA and told him it was $10,000 scholarship he was like Wow if it was that easy I should've applied. -_-

But yeah, if he roomed with me, he wouldn't be an RA, he'd just be a roommate.

Just be honest, but put him down softly.

No point in burning bridges if that can be avoided.

...

Also, my roommate moved out halfway through the first semester of my freshman year. IT WAS AWESOME. Always choose single room. Always.

He's just really easily offended so as softly I can put it, he'll still overreact about it and then probably pin it on me.

I forgot to write about it on there, but he actually annoyed my 2nd roommate to the point he moved out early January.

I actually complained to him about how I have to go outside to make phone calls but his gaming talk is pretty much like a huge phone call so he should game outside too.

He said that we should just both be as loud as we want then. And I was like, that doesn't even make sense.

My room mate is slob. Never mops, sweeps, or cleans in general. When he cooks he fries everything and doesnt wipe it up. He shaves and leaves the mess either in the tub or the sink depending on what he shaves. He is always blasting NBA Live whatever damn year or rap.

Keep in mind we live in the barracks and have white glove inspections 1-3 times a week. FUCK.

Take this as warning. You can always get worse. MUCH WORSE. Or better. I say be direct with him but with tact. If your seeing problems more than likely he is also.

if that can be avoided.

Some people are just going to be that way. It sucks, but hey, not everyone's going to like you. As long as you don't intentionally give a person specific reasons to dislike you, that's fine in my book. Just move on.

No need to put up with stress of a shitty roommate. Tell him that you are going to do the single room and if he asks why tell him you can't handle his yelling at his computer anymore. It is easier to live on your own than with a friend, especially if you have to share a room. I can tolerate sharing a house or apartment as long as I have my room but unless you are a female I will not share a room. Take the single and just let him know whats up, your life will be better, just don't be an asshole about it and you should still be able to remain friends. Or you can go scope out the shittiest room you can find in the dorm you will be an RA for and tell him its the best one. . .

yea just yell over each other that'll work.

Fortunately I go home every weekend so my roommate gets the place to himself and he hangs out in the common area during the week so we both can do our own thing. Having a common area in your dorm would probably solve 50% of the problem.

Just get the single. As a person who has had more than one bad roomate it is never worth it to do a double when you can get away with a single, unless you get along with someone really really well. Like, family well.

Im moving into my own place at the end of this semester for the first time. Fuck dorms.

I know your feel. I currently rent out a room to a friend I've known for probably almost 20 years now. He spends his days playing games and watching movies and yelling at the TV. also generally making a mess of my house and then leaving it for me to clean. We have a sort of funny relationship as we've known each other for such a long time and used to play football and baseball together, so when things get tense like this it usually turns into a shouting mach and a few punches then later beers and everything is good.

Not saying that this is the best way, I don't know your personality or his, but sometimes bringing things into the open in a way you know will result in an (eventual) positive response might be the best way to go about it.

Start randomly shitting your bed and then masturbating about it. Promise, he'll fuck right off for you, saving you the trouble. All it's gonna cost you is a few loads of laundry and the loss of a little dignity. But, since you're staging it, you can fix it so he can't ever prove it happened and you can be like, "I dunno what happened, he started making up these outrageous stories... "

I don't know, scheming is fun, but I feel like just being honest would be the better route. Even if it's harder and less entertaining...

Either way, the person's not going to like you. The question is, will it be that way because you were honest (but not a jerk) or because you're a seemingly horrible person with uncontrollable wanking urges?

Is he an only child? There is no good way. either start spending lots of time outside of the room, or just study and complain that his out bursts are distracting. If he doesn't shut up, then you have a guilt free way of say "hey i have to study"

I had a POS apartment mate who would stay up all night playing video games, and go to bed when I was waking up for work. He was also on his 4th major as he kept failing out the others.

Your own room? You'd be mad not to take it

League of Legends ruins lives, so get away from him while you can. One of my friends has been playing LoL for 2 years STRAIGHT (probably because its the only game that runs on his best buy special laptop). He hasn't left his room in a year and a half. He lost his job, his girlfriend, his parents moved out of the house and a new family moved in but they can't get him out of his room so they just bring him food and a poop bucket. The last time I talked to him, which was 8 months ago, he told me he forgot what the sun looked like.

So far there is no end in sight.

about 90% of that story was made up

okay 95%, I have a friend who is addicted to league, thats about it.

My best friend and I were roommates, our freshman year of college. I'm still surprised that Al and I are still close friends, especially given how shitty we both were as roommates. (No, seriously... He'd throw tennis balls when I'd start snoring, and I stored lumber and car parts in my half of the dorm.)

My point is, I think you guys would get along a hell of a lot better if you didn't have to share a small space with each other.

I had a friend go through this sort of stuff. If you ignore it until the last minute, your gunna have a bad day. This kid lost friends over it. It got to the point where the other person ran into trouble finding a place to stay because he was surprised and unprepared to find a place on his own. Just tell him you want your own room. I know its a hard conversation but just push the point of having peace and quite and privacy.

Just tell him you've decided to get the single room as an RA and let that be the reason he's not going to be your roommate anymore. Stand firm in your decision, and don't let him convince you otherwise. Like others have said, no reason to burn bridges (if it's not necessary).

When you've got a friend/roommate you have to separate the two camps. And if you bring this up he should understand this. Don't make it personal, don't shit on him for being who he is, but make him understand that you have to be in a bearable living situation. If you work out whatever situation you have in your dorm to mutual understanding, you'll be able to get along outside that.

I'd tell him that you don't think you're compatible roommates based on the annoyances you've pointed out. And if he cares enough to try and adjust those irritations, who knows. But there's no reason to just ditch him forever. He probably has no idea you feel this way.
